The band Ibrahim Djo experience is the result of an encounter between French musicians and Ibrahim Djo, a Tuareg guitarist.
For five years, the band travelled between France and Mali. Those trips were full of music, sharing, work and rehearsals but also long discussions while drinking tea, about their visions of the world, their ways of life and their music. This meeting is as musical as it is human and turned into an experience, a trade and an adventure.
Ibrahim Djo's guitar playing is inspired by Tinariwen, Ali Farka Touré and Jimi Hendrix. The other members of the band come from different musical worlds and bring their own influences. With this first album, the Ibrahim Djo experience offers a trip between different styles, from Tuareg traditional music to blues; from rock to pop and jazz. In his lyrics, Ibrahim evokes life in the desert: its problems, joys and traditions. His aim is to value and protect the wealth of his culture, to remind the young generations of the dangers of modern society while forgetting their traditions. By writing his songs in Tamasheq, which is the language of the “Kel Tamasheq“ (the Tuaregs), Ibrahim wants to speak directly to his people who face so many problems during this transitional period.
The album “Azeman“ is the result of this union. In Tamasheq, this word has different senses and meanings. It can express the notion of time, but also a period that haunts the memories. The times of droughts, but also the times of meetings and of love; the times when traditions led daily life and gave balance to society; the times of abundant pastures for cattle. Those bygone times have been a strong musical influence that you can hear in many traditional songs. Despite this influence, Ibrahim Djo's lyrics are also connected to the present. Tuareg society is in a period of change. Droughts and civil disturbances return each year.
